But there are some premises that absolutely aren’t going to work–no matter how much intelligence, talent or craft the film makers bring to them. It’s about a brilliant Ithaca teen-ager, Paul Stephens Christopher Collet , who decides to build his own atomic bomb for a high school science fair. Opportunely, his mother, Elizabeth Jill Eikenberry , is dating the laser-eyed, burningly enthusiastic John Mathewson John Lithgow , research engineer at a local secret atomic lab. His mother’s love life enables Paul to filch some superpurified plutonium. He swipes Mathewson’s access card, breaks into the lab and dodges the security on a stormy night. It seems only slightly more taxing a prank than breaking into the high school gym and rifling the trophy case.

On September 11, , two of four hijacked planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the original World Trade Center , and the towers collapsed. The 7 World Trade Center was not struck by a plane, but collapsed because of heavy debris falling from the impacts of planes and the collapse of the North Tower. The other buildings of the World Trade Center complex were damaged beyond repair and soon after demolished.
The collapse of the Twin Towers caused extensive damage to surrounding buildings and skyscrapers in Lower Manhattan, and resulted in the deaths of 2, people, in addition to those on the planes. Many rescue workers and residents of the area also developed several life-threatening illnesses and some have since died.
Apparently, his original inspiration was the actual Manhattan Project, that “last burst of real innocence” before the age of nuclear anxiety. It might have been a fascinating film, probably far superior to this one–supposedly, the high cost these days of period re-creations doomed it.
September 6 – October 14, Tailored is a collection of shapes that interlock with human bodies. Fitting closely around shoulders, chests, and hips, the objects offer intimate contact on a level not usually found in furniture or architecture. Her work focuses on specificity rather than generality—how the details of an existing condition can be generative, rather than the imposition of an external system.
In Tailored, the pre-existing condition is human bodies, each defined by individual shapes and sizes. While each piece in the show is tailored to a different person, the project produces surprising commonalities in proportion and dimension between people of different genders and sizes—generating an ambiguity between the specific and the general. The abstraction and ambiguity of the shapes produces an open playfulness as people find their own configurations of interlocking.
Materials generously donated by Filz Felt Post Post-War Honorable Mention This project proposes subtractions to postwar towers in Los Angeles, in order to expose the spatial possibilities of the existing structural frames and to develop an aesthetic of subtraction to rival new construction. Wherever clusters of density exist in Los Angeles, such as along the Wilshire Corridor or in Downtown, there is a plethora of s and 70s exposed concrete frame towers.
Built in a range of scales and construction quality, one could say this is one of the most characteristic building types of the Los Angeles area.

The human genome, which contains all the genetic information of a cell, is less than a gigabyte in size. The result of the E8 calculation, which contains all the information about E8 and its representations, is 60 gigabytes in size. That is enough space to store 45 days of continuous music in MP3 format. While many scientific projects involve processing large amounts of data, the E8 calculation is very different: Like the Human Genome Project, these results are just the beginning.
According to project leader Jeffrey Adams, “This is basic research which will have many implications, most of which we don’t understand yet. Just as the human genome does not instantly give you a new miracle drug, our results are a basic tool which people will use to advance research in other areas. According to Hermann Nicolai, a director of the Max Planck Institute in Potsdam, Germany not affiliated with the project , “This is an impressive achievement. While mathematicians have known for a long time about the beauty and the uniqueness of E8, we physicists have come to appreciate its exceptional role only more recently yet, in our attempts to unify gravity with the other fundamental forces into a consistent theory of quantum gravity, we now encounter it at almost every corner!
Thus, understanding the inner workings of E8 is not only a great advance for pure mathematics, but may also help physicists in their quest for a unified theory.

Central Park , which opened to the public in , became the first landscaped public park in an American city. The city’s strong commercial ties to the southern United States existed for many reasons, including the industrial power of the Hudson River harbor, which allowed trade with stops such as the West Point Foundry , one of the great manufacturing operations in the early United States; and the city’s Atlantic Ocean ports, rendering New York City the American powerhouse in terms of industrial trade between the northern and southern United States.
New York’s growing immigrant population, which had originated largely from Germany and Ireland , began in the late s to include waves of Italians and Central and Eastern European Jews flowing in en masse.
