Earth News England is sinking while Scotland rises above sea levels, according to new study England is sinking into the sea while Scotland is rising at such a rate it may counteract the effects of sea level rise due to climate change, according to a new geological map. By Louise Gray , Environment Correspondent As the ice retreated 20, years ago the release of the enormous weight meant the north slowly tilted up while the south sank down. Scotland is still experiencing this “springboard” effect while southern Ireland, Wales and England continues to sink.
The new study shows that land levels could rise by up to 10cm in some areas of Scotland over the next century, offsetting the effects of sea level rise caused by global warming. But in parts of England, where the land is set to sink by up to 5cm over the next century, it could add between 10 to 33 per cent on sea level rises. The map is the most accurate projection of land subsidence in the UK ever compiled. The Durham team not only looked a “geophyscial” simulations, which predict what will happen to the earth’s crust over time, but studied sediments in the soil at 80 sites around the country to see how the land has been changing in the past.
Prof ian Shennan, who led the study, said soil sediments showed that sites in the north of the country are still rising. The earth’s crust has reacted over thousands of years and is continuing to react,” he said. Prof Shennan said the information could now be used, alongside predictions of sea level rises caused by climate change, to help councils and other bodies protect vulnerable areas like coastland.

They failed to persuade Fulham Football Club to adopt the ground as their home after a dispute over the rent, so Mears considered selling to the Great Western Railway Company, who wanted to use the land as a coal-dumping yard. There is an unconfirmed story regarding the incident that claims Mears was on the verge of selling, and was being persuaded by his colleague Fred Parker not to, when Mears’ scotch terrier bit Parker on the leg.
Parker took the incident in good spirit so Mears, impressed by this, decided to take his colleague’s advice and found a new football club to play at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea were denied entry to the Southern League following objections from Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, so instead, applied for admission to the Football League. Their candidacy was endorsed at the Football League AGM on May 29, , with a speech by Parker, which emphasised the new club’s financial stability and its impressive new stadium and team playing an important part.
Blue shirts were adopted by Mears, after the racing colours of Lord Chelsea, along with white shorts and dark blue socks.

He is said to have spoken of a beast with “large eyes, set in a horny sort of skull…with teeth that could be seen glistening in the moonlight”. He apparently claimed that the sub was so damaged in its battle with the “monster”, it could no longer submerge.
However, Dr Innes McCartney, a historian and nautical archaeologist who helped identify the wreckage, does not believe the tale. Image copyright Scottish Power He added: It attempted to do a crash dive to get away.

Deriving from that spoken by the Dorians in ancient Greece, it has been applied in more recent times to the dialects of England and of Scotland, while in Scotland itself the term refers pre-eminently to the dialect of the Scots language which is spoken in the north-eastern corner of the country. The Doric of North-East Scots meets both the traditional qualifications. On the one hand, its broadness can present difficulty even for Scots in other parts of Scotland, while on the other, its richest manifestation has always been found in the rural hinterland, where the language has recorded and labelled all the trappings of everyday life in what was a largely farming and fishing community.
